?Arthur Russell was a farm boy from Oskaloosa who moved to New York (via a Buddhist commune in San Francisco) where he worked and played with artists as fantastically varied as Philip Glass, Allen Ginsberg, Nicky Siano and Richard Hell. A pioneering disco producer, cellist, composer and singer-songwriter, he died aged just 40 in 1992, and is only recently getting the wide, often obsessive, audience he deserves.
Wild Combination is a moving and absorbing portrait of the maverick musician. The film uses rare as well as constructed archival footage and commentary from Russell's family, his partner Tom Lee, his friends and closest collaborators, including Glass and Ginsberg, plus plenty of his brilliant, beautiful dance tracks.
